The meeting of foreign ministers of six countries was held in London on May 2, 2008. British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, German Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeier, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister He Yafei who is the special envoy of Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and E.U. Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana attended the meeting.

At the meeting the six countries reiterated their commitment to solving the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic negotiations. After in-depth discussions the heads of foreign affairs reached agreement on the resumption of talks on the Iranian nuclear issue and decided to submit the agreement to Iran as soon as possible. According to the agreement, the six countries are willing to negotiate with Iran on a wide range of issues including nuclear energy, politics, economy, agriculture and civil aviation so as to seek a comprehensive, ultimate and proper settlement of the issue.

China always supports maintaining the nuclear non-proliferation system and solving the Iranian nuclear issue peacefully through diplomatic talks in order to maintain peace and stability in the Middle East. As a state party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, Iran enjoys the right of peacefully using nuclear energy and at the same time should undertake corresponding international obligations, stressed He Yafei.

He noted that China is committed to working for the reconciliation and promoting peace talks and has made relentless efforts in that regard. China hopes the parties concerned strengthen diplomatic efforts to launch the negotiations at the earliest date possible so as to seek an all-round, long-term and appropriate solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.

The political director-generals from the foreign ministries of the six countries held a meeting on Iranian nuclear issue in Shanghai April this year. They discussed such documents as the resumption of talks and made positive progress.
